East Pierce Firefighters Set to Receive Body Armor for Escalated Threat Responses

Pierce | 05/08/17

At the April 18th Fire Commissioners meeting, the board of publicly elected Fire Commissioners voted to approve the purchase of 32 individual body armor jackets. The price tag is $76,000 dollars for these potentially life saving pieces of equipment. Over the last decade the role of firefighters/EMS has evolved to include more and more responses to active violent events. Fortunately in East Pierce County we have not had any significant events but we know that their is always the potential. The policies and training have yet to begin for these new pieces of equipment, however with the expected delivery within in a few months, your East Pierce Firefighters can expect to begin training as soon as possible. Having these important safety items will not change how we assess and respond to threats currently, but it will enhance the safety of the firefighters who may find themselves in one of these high risk / low frequency events.
